Another 30 day music challenge
26. What’s the worst song ever released? I’m sure there are worse, and l’ll probably get flak for this, but in my mind it has to be Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks, a huge hit in the early 70s. Nirvana covered it to no avail. It’s so bad I don’t want to post the audio or even link to it. It was written by Jacques Brel and translated into English by Rod McKuen. Need I say more?
27. Are you listening to any music now? This very second? No, I’m blogging.
28. What was the last song you heard? I Got Mine by The Black Keys.
29. What’s the next gig you’re going to? Gotye, next weekend.
30. Spam tumblr with photos/gifs of all your favorite bands + artists. I don’t reblog gifs very often, so my next post will include a few of my favs.

21. Do you have any music posters up in your room? They had boxes full of these and were handing them out after the show. I also have an Incubus poster, but it’s currently at the frame shop.
22. Do you have the same musical taste as your friends? Not really. There may be one or two who share some of my taste, but not my - shall we say - enthusiasm. That’s why I’m on Tumblr.
23. Have you seen any musicals? I grew up 90 minutes from midtown Manhattan, so I’ve seen many Broadway musicals. I enjoyed a lot of them, but it’s not really my thing.
24. If you could see any musical what would you see? I hear they’re making a musical theater production out of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by The Flaming Lips. Part of me would like to see it, but…I don’t know. I’m not sure I like the idea.
25. Do you listen to the radio? In the car, yes. I like to play air drums while I’m driving.

Day 20. Five photos of your favorite band/artist.

What a good excuse for a bellybutton appreciation post.

19. Snog, marry, avoid the first 3 artists on shuffle.
We don’t say “snog” here in the U.S., but I get the picture. As for “marry,” I’ve already blogged extensively about how I would not marry any musician or artist, because I know from experience that what attracts you to them is what eventually drives you insane. “Avoid” makes no sense, because if they’re on my iPod, it means I like them, so why would I want to avoid them? So really, the question is, “to snog, or not to snog?” So here goes: The first song to come up is, appropriately enough, Strange Desire by The Black Keys. Definitely snog. One, or the other, or preferably both. Next up is I Fought Piranhas by The White Stripes. Jack White I would so totally snog. Finally, Sweet Cloud by The Kills. Well, I think Jamie Hince is or was married to a supermodel, so I don’t think I could compete with that. However, although I’ve never snogged or had the desire to snog a woman, I sure wouldn’t kick Alison Mosshart off my couch.

12. What’s your favorite genre of music? Whatever genre describes the likes of Incubus (alt-metal?), Yes (prog-rock?), Jack White (alternative?), Led Zeppelin (classic rock?). I never know what to call it. All I know is, I’m not partial to jazz. There, I’ve said it.

13. What song has the highest play count on your iTunes? My iTunes count is all messed up, so I don’t trust the numbers. It does make sense, though, that the highest counts are for songs by Maroon 5, because before my legs stopped working I was listening to my iPod while walking three miles a day on a treadmill, and I found that Maroon 5’s music is perfect for that.

14. What song would you sing on karaoke? I answered this one already on the other 30 day music challenge I’m doing. Eternal Flame by The Bangles.

15. What song should never be sung on
I think there’s something missing from this question. Sung on what? An instrumental to which no one should ever put lyrics? I’m not sure what they’re going for here, so I’m going to make up my own question: What song should never be played when you call your divorce lawyer’s office and they put you on hold? I know this answer from personal experience: We’ve Only Just Begun by The Carpenters.

16. What’s your favorite album? Right now, my favorite album by my favorite band is A Crow Left of The Murder by Incubus, but I can’t say it’s my favorite album of all time. I really don’t think I have one.

17. What would be the best lineup for a festival? Any lineup that includes the two best live bands I’ve seen to date: Incubus and My Morning Jacket. The video posted here is a clip from the MMJ show I went to last December.

18. Do you get any music magazines? Not for ages. When I was a teenager we all subscribed to Rolling Stone. Now I have Tumblr.

7. Can you play any instruments? Sadly, no. When I was a teenager, my sister worked for the dean of the school of music at Yale. One day, the Tokyo String Quartet came to Yale to give a performance, and I got to meet them. When we were introduced, they mistook me for one of the music school students and said, “Oh, hello, what do you play?” It was highly embarrassing. I answered, “The radio.” I don’t think they got it.

8. Which band would you give anything to see? I don’t know that I’d “give anything,” but I’ve never seen the Foo Fighters and would like to very much. And I wouldn’t mind seeing Incubus again. And again. And again…

9. Have you got any music hoodies, T-shirts, wristbands etc…? So far I have two Incubus shirts. I also have my high-tech Firefly Music Festival wristband, which I blogged about a few months back.

10. Five photos of your favorite gig. I’m taking “gig” to mean concert, right? My favorite concert will always be the first time I saw Incubus, which was here in Miami last year, but unfortunately I didn’t have a very good view, and I’m not that great a photographer. Here, though, are the two best pictures I think I’ve ever taken at a concert, and they both happened completely by accident.

11. Favorite song at this minute? This very minute? Maybe Freedom at 21 by Jack White.

I’m in the midst of this 30 day music challenge, but I’m discovering that there are other similar challenges floating around out there. I find them very therapeutic, but they do suck up a lot of time. I’m going to start a couple of other ones, but I might skip around, or skip some questions altogether, or take several questions at once. Here goes:

1. First 10 songs on shuffle, write a little about each one.

  • Incubus - Take Me To Your Leader: The video is a bit of a take-off on one of my favorite movies, The Gods Must Be Crazy.
  • Santana - Oye Como Va: There were parts of this I never understood until I moved to Miami and met lots of Cubans.
  • The Black Crowes - Remedy: One of my favorites from the 90s.
  • Joni Mitchell - In France They Kiss on Main Street: A reminiscence about life as a wild teenager (which I was not). I love the part about "kissing in the back seat, thrilling to the Brando-like things that he said."
  • Incubus - Rogues: Not surprising to see another Incubus song pop up, considering how many of them are on my iPod.
  • The Black Keys - Howlin’ For You: I think I blogged this once with the caption, “I’d howl for Dan Auerbach.”
  • 311 - Count Me In: Goes really well with Are You In? by Incubus.
  • Maroon 5 - Hands All Over: Yeah, I like Maroon 5. You got a problem with that?
  • Linkin Park - Robot Boy: Dangerously hypnotic. First time I heard it was on a long road trip.
  • Manchester Orchestra - Leaky Breaks: Also hypnotic. The perfect song to be last on an album, and last on this list.

2. How many bands have you seen? If you factor in all of the opening acts, it would have to be at least 100.

3. Which was the best band you’ve seen live? Incubus.

4. Which was the worst band you’ve seen live? I saw Rod Stewart once, and although I like him a lot, I just remember that the concert was really boring. I also once saw Steely Dan, and they were great, but ironically, they are such consummate musicians that their show was a little dull because they were just too perfect.

5. Have you ever met someone in a band? I met Incubus a few months ago. They were absolutely charming. I’m in love with every one of them. I’ve also met some fairly important people in the Latin music world through my Cuban ex-husband, probably the most famous being Willy Chirino. Nice guy, although I thought his wife was a little strange. I spent a New Year’s Eve at their house once. And I’ve met the Tokyo String Quartet. Not sure if that counts.

6. Have you ever been in a band? The closest I came was in high school, when I sang at a student concert with two other girls. One of them played guitar. We were good. We did three songs: Free Man in Paris by Joni Mitchell, Love is a Rose by Neil Young, and a Beatles song - I think it was Norwegian Wood. Later that year I was supposed to sing with a guy I had a huge crush on. He was going to play guitar and I was going to sing Landslide by Fleetwood Mac. I was so nervous I thought I would die. In the end, there was a huge snowstorm that night and the concert was cancelled. That’s the extent of my musical career.
