30 day music challenge
Day 15: A song that has been covered by another artist.
I was going to go with Brandon Boyd’s vast improvement on Elvis Costello’s Alison, but with all the chatter about Timelapse Consortium during the past couple of days, I thought something progressive would be appropriate. So here’s early Yes with a brilliant cover of Paul Simon’s America. My other idea was to focus just on the tons of great covers of Bob Dylan’s work, my favorites being Rage Against the Machine’s version of Maggie’s Farm, The Dead Weather’s New Pony, Eric Clapton’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, The Pretenders’ Forever Young, and the Band’s I Shall Be Released. Probably the most famous take on the latter was done by Joe Cocker, and of all the bazillions of Beatles covers, I think the best is his version of With A Little Help From My Friends. Then there’s Linda Ronstadt, who pretty much did nothing but covers, many of them great, but none better than her version of Neil Young’s Birds. (She covered Alison too, by the way.) I could go on and on forever with this, but I’ll just mention three more: the Chili Peppers’ cover of Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground, Chris Cornell’s cover of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean, and the Foo Fighters’ cover of Arcade Fire’s Keep the Car Running.
there are times i fear brandon will look like iggy pop as he gets older. much like in his wikipedia profile picture. I tried to post the link but it wouldn't let. iggy pop is cool and all but he hasn't aged well.
Iggy Pop is awesome, actually. I was never that big a fan of his, but he lives here in Miami, and last year he was invited to speak at the college where I work. He gave a very candid talk about his life, and about the music business. He really won me over, and the students loved him. I think any rock star would do well to age more like Robert Plant, though, who does show his years, but is still the coolest old person I can think of (with the possible exception of Mick Jagger). Most of the others need to hang it up, but these two can still get away with it. I think that’s the secret to being old and famous, really - having the good taste to know when to bow out. I’m sure that, when the time comes (hopefully not for a long while), our dear Brandon will do the right thing. By the way, have you heard they’re making a movie about the famous New York club CBGBs, and Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters is going to play Iggy Pop? How cool is that?

Mick Jagger & Foo Fighters on SNL, and the two themes of my post-divorce existence: 19th Nervous Breakdown, and It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It).

Easy for you to say.

Still in the throes of joy and amazement over finally seeing a student on campus in an Incubus shirt the other day, guess what I saw today? A student in a Foo Fighters shirt. To understand the significance, you have to realize that I work on one of the largest college campuses in the world, and I’ve never, until this week, seen this. Sometimes I don’t understand our students, but I do love them. ♥
Update, April 19: A student in a Red Hot Chili Peppers shirt just asked me if I would grade his library assignment so he could turn it in (late) to his professor. “Anything for a Chili Peppers fan,” I replied. Unfortunately, I quickly realized that he had cheated on the assignment, so I had to give him a failing grade. Sometimes our students disappoint me, but I still love them. I can only hope he learned something.
