Maroon 5 (featuring Rozzi Crane) - Wake Up Call
Recorded live in Sunrise, Florida, March 29, 2013.

Oh, alright, I’ll post this one. I wasn’t going to, for a couple of reasons, even though it’s one of Maroon 5’s best songs. First, I had to dodge a lot of people in front of me and couldn’t get a good fix on James Valentine during his solo, and second, this is a perfect example of a performance that is great, but doesn’t fit the lyrics. This is a song about a guy who catches his girlfriend in bed with another man, and in a dark comedy kind of way, shoots him dead and then goes, “whoops” (I’m paraphrasing). Not the kind of thing you’d expect to see performed as a bouncy duet with audience participation. I would like to have seen something with a bit more of an edge, but I guess that wasn’t the order of the evening. Whatever. It’s not like I didn’t get my money’s worth at that show. I’m still shaking the confetti out of my underwear.

Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved
Recorded live in Sunrise, Florida, March 29, 2013.

To be honest, this is one of my least favorite songs by Maroon 5, but thanks to a huge suspension bridge that descended from the ceiling for the band’s encore, suddenly Adam Levine and the lovely James Valentine were right up in my face, and I was no longer bummed about having spent most of the show sitting halfway across the arena behind the world’s tallest person. Sometimes life doesn’t suck.

Maroon 5 - Stereo Hearts

Dressed all in white, with tattoos and flower lei, all he needed was the proper hat and he could have passed for a sailor in the South Pacific.

Not my best video, but it’s the best song from Overexposed, and a good example of the show’s spectacular lighting effects. Quite different from when I saw Maroon 5 a couple of years ago in a much smaller venue. It’s amazing what a little overexposure on TV can do for your band’s concert budget.

Maroon 5 - Payphone
Recorded live in Sunrise, Florida, March 29, 2013.

Stay tuned for more video, as my view got considerably better later in the show. In the meantime, it’s official: I’m in love with Matt Flynn.

A little teaser of the photos & videos I’ll be posting in the next couple of days. Yep, I was close enough to read the tattoos.

On my way to see this cutie, and that other guy too - Adam something? ;-)

Hardcore Pearl Jam fans may scoff, but to me it’s a concept just crazy enough to work.

Someone I know in real life has expressed on Facebook his contempt for this song and for Maroon 5 in general, which sparked a lengthy discussion (in which I did not participate) of how Maroon 5 used to be a rock band, and what happened to Maroon 5, etc. Jesus, that’s just what irritates me about Facebook. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but there’s way too much yammering and GPOY over there and not enough music. I do like this song, by the way, even though it’s not about Jane.

Sweet! Just snagged a VIP package for the Fort Lauderdale show in March. Perfect timing, because buying a ticket to their south Florida concert last year was the very first act of my post-divorce “be good to yourself” campaign, and now, a year later, just as recent events have sent me hurtling back to square one on the guilt/anger/depression scale, Maroon 5 announces they’re coming back to town. I’m feeling better already.

Another 30 day music challenge

12. What’s your favorite genre of music? Whatever genre describes the likes of Incubus (alt-metal?), Yes (prog-rock?), Jack White (alternative?), Led Zeppelin (classic rock?). I never know what to call it. All I know is, I’m not partial to jazz. There, I’ve said it.

13. What song has the highest play count on your iTunes? My iTunes count is all messed up, so I don’t trust the numbers. It does make sense, though, that the highest counts are for songs by Maroon 5, because before my legs stopped working I was listening to my iPod while walking three miles a day on a treadmill, and I found that Maroon 5’s music is perfect for that.

14. What song would you sing on karaoke? I answered this one already on the other 30 day music challenge I’m doing. Eternal Flame by The Bangles.

15. What song should never be sung on
I think there’s something missing from this question. Sung on what? An instrumental to which no one should ever put lyrics? I’m not sure what they’re going for here, so I’m going to make up my own question: What song should never be played when you call your divorce lawyer’s office and they put you on hold? I know this answer from personal experience: We’ve Only Just Begun by The Carpenters.

16. What’s your favorite album? Right now, my favorite album by my favorite band is A Crow Left of The Murder by Incubus, but I can’t say it’s my favorite album of all time. I really don’t think I have one.

17. What would be the best lineup for a festival? Any lineup that includes the two best live bands I’ve seen to date: Incubus and My Morning Jacket. The video posted here is a clip from the MMJ show I went to last December.

18. Do you get any music magazines? Not for ages. When I was a teenager we all subscribed to Rolling Stone. Now I have Tumblr.

Day 17: A song that you would sing a duet with on karaoke.

The Bangles - Eternal Flame

I don’t watch that show The Voice, so I don’t know if this has been done already, but somebody really needs to do a duet of this song with Adam Levine. For that, I’d tear myself away from Tumblr and turn on the TV.

30 day music challenge

Day 2: A song you like with a number in the title.

A tie between Three Little Birds by Bob Marley and 11 a.m. by Incubus. Honorable mentions include One Step Up by Bruce Springsteen (the only song I’m listing with “one” in the title, because there are way too many), Four Sticks and Ten Years Gone by Led Zeppelin, Sun/C79 by Cat Stevens, Just the Two of Us by Bill Withers & Grover Washington Jr., 4 + 20 by Stephen Stills, Four Strong Winds by Neil Young, Freedom at 21 by Jack White, 3’s & 7’s by Queens of the Stone Age, Dead Road 7 by The Kills, and, okay, two more “one” songs: In One Ear by Cage the Elephant, and Bob Dylan’s One More Cup of Coffee by The White Stripes. For something new, let’s throw in 45 by Gaslight Anthem, and can I get a bonus point for One More Night by Maroon 5, since the band’s name has a number in it too?
