Enough with the happy songs. Time for some rage.

In keeping with today’s theme of inter-band collaboration…

One of my favorite Incubus jams with Tom Morello….

He raged with his machine in this jam thats forsureee

Nine Inch Nails - March of the Pigs:

Rage Against the Machine - Bulls on Parade:

Rage Against the Machine - Tire Me

I’m getting to where I need a hit before and after the meetings.

Rage Against the Machine - Bulls on Parade

Yep, departmental meeting this afternoon.

Rage Against the Machine - Guerilla Radio

I survived another departmental meeting today, which I always celebrate with a bit of rage.

Yet another 30 day music challenge

Day 9: A song that makes you want to kick some ass.
Day 10: A song that makes you feel empowered.

Rage Against the Machine - Take the Power Back

I crank this up in the car after every departmental meeting. I really should do it before the meetings, but I need my job.

Day 21: A favorite song with a person’s name in the title.

I never realized how many songs I like fit into this category. Considering what’s going on in my life right now, I should probably go with Rod Stewart’s Maggie May or Simon & Garfunkel’s Mrs. Robinson, but instead I’m putting Angie by The Rolling Stones at the top of the list. Next is Bobbie Gentry’s Ode to Billie Joe, one of the greatest songs ever. Other favorites include:

Speaking of Brandon Boyd, he’s also been known to sing a few bars of Billie Jean now and then, and he’s been quoted as saying his favorite song ever is Leonard Cohen’s Suzanne. I never loved it, but for him, and because it’s pretty, I’ll offer up the Judy Collins version. Speaking of Judy Collins, there’s a song about her called Suite: Judy Blue Eyes by Crosby, Stills & Nash. There are lots of songs with the name Ruby in the title, so I’ll only mention a few: Ruby by The Kaiser Chiefs, Ruby Soho by Rancid, and Rubylove by Cat Stevens. I also have to include a few Jenny songs (since that’s my real name), and there are several, the classic of all time being Jenny Jenny by Tommy Tutone. There’s also Jenny by Walk the Moon, Jenny Was a Friend of Mine by The Killers, and Jennifer Juniper by Donovan. And finally, since I named my cat after it, here’s Kiwi by Maroon 5.

Day 15: A song that has been covered by another artist.

I was going to go with Brandon Boyd’s vast improvement on Elvis Costello’s Alison, but with all the chatter about Timelapse Consortium during the past couple of days, I thought something progressive would be appropriate. So here’s early Yes with a brilliant cover of Paul Simon’s America. My other idea was to focus just on the tons of great covers of Bob Dylan’s work, my favorites being Rage Against the Machine’s version of Maggie’s Farm, The Dead Weather’s New Pony, Eric Clapton’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, The Pretenders’ Forever Young, and the Band’s I Shall Be Released. Probably the most famous take on the latter was done by Joe Cocker, and of all the bazillions of Beatles covers, I think the best is his version of With A Little Help From My Friends. Then there’s Linda Ronstadt, who pretty much did nothing but covers, many of them great, but none better than her version of Neil Young’s Birds. (She covered Alison too, by the way.) I could go on and on forever with this, but I’ll just mention three more: the Chili Peppers’ cover of Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground, Chris Cornell’s cover of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean, and the Foo Fighters’ cover of Arcade Fire’s Keep the Car Running.

Devendra Banhart - Now That I Know

Today I’ve been listening to Deftones, Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine, and early Incubus. Where was this guy a couple of nights ago when I was in neo-hippie mode and zoning out to Nick Drake?

Rage Against the Machine - Bombtrack

…and then my honey days ended and turned to vinegar. It happens.

Rage Against the Machine - Take the Power Back

My favorite après-meeting song.

Rage Against the Machine - Maggie’s Farm

Possibly the best Dylan cover ever. (Well okay, this one by the Dead Weather comes close.)

Born of a Broken Man
Rage Against the Machine

Yes, thank you.
